When you step into a life with Christ, you receive something for that journey: a giftedness to serve God in a way only you can. God’s plan for our lives is that we meet the needs of the church family, and the world around us, and God has prepared us in special ways to meet those needs.
“As each one of us has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” (1 Peter 4:10)
If you have trusted Christ, then you have a spiritual gift! Even if you don’t know what it is, or don’t feel particularly gifted in a specific area, the Bible teaches that you DO have a gift that you can use to serve God. And believe it or not, your gift is vital to the work of God in our church and community.
The difference between gifts and talents:
Talents have to do with techniques and methods; gifts have to do with spiritual abilities.
Talents depend on natural ability; gifts on spiritual endowment.
Talents instruct, inspire, and entertain. When a gift is exercised, something ‘more’ happens in and through the one who is ministering.
This ‘more’ is God’s Spirit using your God-given personality, talents, abilities, AND spiritual gifts … working together to make you who you are! Scripture reminds us that as a member of the body of Christ, we are each important to his work in this place. God has appointed you as a gift and with a purpose!
First Peter says that God wishes for you to be a ‘good steward’ of God’s gift to you! The best way to do that is to begin now: discovering, developing and using your gift to serve Christ, and Christ’s church. The result of using your gift is that the entire church community ministers to each other and to the community. That’s the way the church – the body of Christ – is supposed to work!
Taking The Spiritual Gifts Assessment
• Answer every question by selecting the number, 0 to 5, that most accurately describes you
(0 = never, 5 = always true).
• Refer to the 0 thru 5 indicator definitions as you go.
• Do not think about each answer, so much as react to the statements.
• To be most accurate, answer quickly and honestly.
• For best results, say a little prayer as you get started!
Your results screen (which you will also receive by email) will include indicators in all 7 areas of spiritual giftedness. See the Ways to Serve pages (Ways to Serve – In the Church, Ways to Serve – In the Community) for Harvard Avenue’s connections to your spiritual gifts. You may read some characteristics that match, and others that seem less ‘like you’. Consider the fullness of the description, and the ways that your gifts combined with the gifts of others might serve together to the good of the greater community.
